Oort cloud (exo)planets

چکیده
Abstract Dynamical instabilities among giant planets are thought to be nearly ubiquitous, and culminate in the ejection of one or more into interstellar space. Here we perform N-body simulations dynamical while accounting for torques from galactic tidal field. We find that a fraction would otherwise have been ejected instead trapped on very wide orbits analogous those Oort cloud comets. The ranges 1-10 per cent, depending initial planetary mass distribution. local density has modest effect trapping efficiency orbital radii planets. majority survive Gyr timescales. Taking account demographics exoplanets, estimate every 200-3000 stars could host an planet. This value is likely overestimate, as do not take place at early enough times affected by their stars’ birth cluster, planet stripping passing stars. If Solar System’s instability happened after cluster dissolution, there ∼7 cent chance ice was captured Sun’s cloud.

Oort Cloud Formation and Dynamics
The Oort cloud is the primary source of the “nearly isotropic” comets, which include new and returning long-period comets and Halley-type comets. We focus on the following topics: (1) the orbital distribution of known comets and the cometary “fading” problem; (2) the population and mass of the Oort cloud, including the hypothetical inner Oort cloud; (3) the number of Oort cloud comets that surv...
متن کاملImpact cratering and the Oort Cloud
We calculate the expected flux profile of comets into the planetary system from the Oort Cloud arising from Galactic tides and encounters with molecular clouds. We find that both periodic and sporadic bombardment episodes, with amplitudes an order of magnitude above background, occur on characteristic time-scales ∼25–35 Myr. Bombardment episodes occurring preferentially during spiral arm crossi...
متن کاملMOND orbits in the Oort cloud
We numerically investigate the features of typical orbits occurring in the Oort cloud (r ≈ 50 − 150 kAU) in the low-acceleration regime of the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) taking into account the External Field Effect (EFE). We use three different forms of the MOND interpolating function μ(x) and two different values for the Galactic field at the Sun’s location. We find that MOND produces...
متن کاملThe mass disruption of Oort cloud comets.
We have calculated the number of dormant, nearly isotropic Oort cloud comets in the solar system by (i) combining orbital distribution models with statistical models of dormant comet discoveries by well-defined surveys and (ii) comparing the model results to observations of a population of dormant comets. Dynamical models that assume that comets are not destroyed predict that we should have dis...
متن کاملThe Oort cloud as a remnant of the protosolar nebula
If comets are assumed to have been created in the cool, dense regions of interstellar clouds, then these macroscopic bodies have to take part in the collapse of a protostar cloud as bodies following the laws of mechanics, in contrast to the gas and microscopic dust, which follow the laws of hydrodynamics. Here we present evidence concerning the solar system comets: if the velocity distribution ...
